The Top 5 Plesk University Courses

1. The Plesk Professional Course

In the Plesk Professional interactive course, you learn how to install Plesk Obsidian and use it to provide hosting services to your customers. You may as well ask what value will this add to your life, business, or resume. But don’t be dismissive – there are many reasons why knowing how to work with server management platforms is important. And it’s proven by a whopping 1,767 course completions.

First of all, technology has completely changed the way businesses work today. However, if you have a small business or are a solopreneur, you can’t always afford to have a separate IT department to manage all your digital processes. Who upgrades and monitors the servers and who troubleshoots problems as they arise? To ease these processes, you can either go to server management professionals who help in setting up and monitoring these crucial processes or you can learn the skills on your own.

Let’s look at how server management is useful in more detail. You can use server management platforms to cut down costs. Instead of hiring people separately to manage servers, monitoring and management can be done by the platform. Hiring people can also be a challenging task for small businesses as finding the right staff always takes time. Depending on different pricing packages, using server manage platforms can result in comparatively lower skilled human resource costs. The best server management platforms also often provide you with the best support. On-call support with the best response time is usually included in the packages offered.

Additionally, as your company grows larger or if you’re planning to scale, the need for more servers grows. More staff is required to maintain and monitor server activities. Server management platforms are specifically dedicated to maintaining a greater number of servers. Knowing how to work with server management platforms saves you time, cost, and increases efficiency. An optimized server management platform automates regular administrative tasks, which can be time-consuming. This helps free your time up to perform other essential tasks.

2. The Plesk Associate Course

In the Plesk Associate course, you learn how to bundle infrastructure, Plesk, extensions, and services to create a managed WordPress hosting solution. Let’s take a look at how Managed WordPress solutions are a crucial add-on to the portfolio of services you can offer your customers. Or maybe you want to host your own WordPress. Either way, this is the course that can teach you the skills to do so and 1,461 course graduates agree.

Why is it useful to have Managed WordPress solutions? You need Managed WordPress to use WordPress efficiently as these solutions have the required resources and technology to maintain and update WordPress websites. The WordPress market share is 35% of all websites in the world. So, companies big or small want the management team that specializes in that Content Management System (CMS). Managed WordPress offers you many benefits, the most important of which are security, performance, and expertise on the platform.

Ever hosted your own WordPress and woke up one day to find all those warnings and notifications for updates? Expertise is a crucial attribute when using WordPress. You may face extremely sophisticated security threats and down-time, which will ultimately affect your online presence and website performance. Managed WordPress acts like your hosting expert and takes care of these problems for you in the least possible time so that any losses are minimized. Wouldn’t it be great if you could gain this expertise?

The above points bring us to the next top Plesk University course:

3. The WordPress Toolkit Course

In the Plesk WordPress Toolkit course, you learn how easy it is to deploy, secure, and maintain a WordPress website with the WordPress Toolkit extension for Plesk.

When talking about WordPress hosting, one of the first critical issues to address is security. A good Managed WordPress solution will provide you with the best security. Regular security helps in removing any malware present on your website. Hackers, bots, and other threats are tackled with the help of a specialized environment. The WordPress Toolkit is configured to do all of this for you with very little action needed from you. This is also a benefit when you want to offer Managed WordPress to your customers.

Additionally, if your business is growing or your customers are rapidly scaling, website traffic is going to fluctuate rapidly as well. Most likely you will require resources to keep the website running smoothly and avoid downtime if you’re scaling. Managed WordPress solutions take care of the smooth running of websites in such conditions. Crashing and downtime of the site can result in the loss of money and reputation of your brand and you want to avoid that at all costs.

Last but not least is the issue of regular WordPress updates. WordPress releases updates on a regular basis. Keeping up with these updates is crucial for the high performance of your website. Excellent hosting management will help your site to cope with the updates and monitor how each update is impacting the website through automated tests. You’ll know if any issue is detected and have some action steps to follow to avoid downtime or security threats. Regular software updates also ensure high security for your website.

So, if you go for the WordPress Toolkit course, you’ll learn the tools to deal with the three most important issues – security, avoiding downtime, and regular updates – both for yourself and your business or your clients and customers.

4. The Plesk Obsidian: What’s New Course

5. The SEO Toolkit Course

The fifth and final course on our list is the SEO Toolkit course. In this course, you learn how to use the SEO Toolkit extension to make your websites more visible by improving their search engine optimization (SEO).

Good SEO management can drive more traffic to your website and a higher rank on search engines. SEO experts study and observe patterns that lead to higher rankings and the correct SEO tool can give you insights about developing better SEO strategies. Higher rankings lead to increased brand awareness, generating more leads, and ultimately increasing your sales revenue. With SEO tools, you also observe your site analytics, helping you to know your customers better and aligning your offers with their needs. You can also get to know where your SEO game is lacking.

Are Our Plesk Udemy Courses For You?

Shared hosting accounts can be incredibly convenient and cost-effective. That’s what makes them ideal for people and businesses with small websites, and equally small budgets. But for growing and large businesses who need things like performance and scalability, they can be incredibly limiting and slow.

Shared hosting means sharing all your server resources — bandwidth, disk, storage space — with many other websites on one single physical server. In contrast, cloud hosting is when your website is hosted on a physical server connected to multiple other servers joined in a cluster (or cloud).

Many people and businesses move to cloud hosting when they need better performance, security, reliability, and scalability. But as a new but increasingly popular option, some are hesitant to do so, believing the process is more difficult than it’s worth. The truth is setting up your own private virtual server is quick and easy. Not only that, but when using the right platform it can make WordPress hosting much simpler and help you offload many tedious and time-consuming tasks like deployment, maintenance, updates, and staging.

Can our five new Plesk Udemy courses help?

Our ‘Make WordPress Hosting Easy’ course series guides you through how you can do all the above and more using the Plesk hosting platform and your choice of five major cloud hosting providers.

All the videos within the courses are accessible and contain step by step instructions which you can follow even if you have minimal technical experience. They’re ideal for everyone from beginners who’re curious about website hosting to web professionals interested in moving from a shared hosting setup to a private virtual server in the cloud.

Install Plesk on Alibaba Cloud in Minutes

Install Plesk on Alibaba Cloud

Alibaba Cloud provides a wide range of cloud services that many use to power their businesses all over the world. And the great news for administrators is that Plesk is also available on Alibaba Cloud to access the latest technology and security. Read on to discover what makes Alibaba worth investing in and how to then install Plesk on Alibaba Cloud.

Installing Plesk on Alibaba Cloud

This step-by-step tutorial from Plesk University shows you how to get started with Plesk on Alibaba Cloud in just a few minutes.

1: Instances and Pricing

In order to install Plesk on Alibaba Cloud, users first need to create a new account on Alibaba Cloud. Then, just select ‘Elastic Computer Service’ in the navigation console and click on ‘Instances’. Go to the ‘Create Instance’ button and choose the pricing you want from the two options available: Pay-as-you-go or Subscription.

2: Select Data Center Regions

Once done, select the datacenter region and zone. Remember, for small business site hosting, it’s worth choosing the data center region and zone closest to the geolocation. Thus, lowering page load times.

3: RAM Size

If you’re unsure which instance to choose, start with the ecs.n1.tiny instance, because you can always upgrade later if you have a subscription. Select the Instance Type. And when choosing the ECS instance to deploy Plesk on, look out for how much RAM it comes with. The more websites you host, the more traffic generates, and hence, the more RAM you’ll need. The Plesk System Requirements will help you estimate the amount of RAM your setup needs.

4: Elastic IP address and more

Set “Network Bandwidth Peak” to “0 M” to have the option to later bind an Elastic IP address to your instance. An Elastic IP address is a constant, public IP address your instance needs for web hosting.

Under “Choose the Operating System”, select the Marketplace Image tab and type Plesk in the search field. Under “Choose Storage”, we recommend SSD Cloud Disk for your site hosting and minimum one Ultra Cloud Disk or Basic Cloud Disk for backups. Under “Security Settings”, set the authentication method for your instance: password or key-based authentication.

5: Successful Activation

Under “Purchase Plan”, specify the number of instances you want (and instance name). Click Buy Now, and then click Activate. When the instance has been successfully activated, you can see it in the Alibaba Cloud console (Elastic Computer Service > Instances > click the data center region you specified during purchase).

6: Buy and bind an Elastic IP

All that’s left to do is purchase and bind an Elastic IP address. After this, your instance should be up and running. However, to start using Plesk on Alibaba Cloud from scratch, you’ll need to perform a short post-install configuration.

7: Opening Ports by Plesk

By default, each time a new instance is created, only certain ports are allowed for inbound connections, which means that posted used by Plesk are closed. Therefore, in order for Plesk and its services to work in an efficient manner, users need to open up specific ports by adding security group rules to the desired instance.

Users can either add a single security rule that allows all incoming connections, which is the preferred option for businesses that do not have much experience with either Plesk or Alibaba Cloud. Another option would be adding multiple security rules to allow incoming connections to only arrive to ports required by Plesk.

Your tailored Plesk config on Alibaba Cloud

Configurations for Plesk available on the Alibaba Cloud Marketplace include; Plesk Onyx on Ubuntu 16 (WebHost), CentOS 7 (WebHost), Ubuntu 16.04 (Web Admin SE), Windows 2012 R2 (WebHost), CentOS 7 (BYOL), Ubuntu 16 (BYOL), and Windows 2012 R2 (BYOL). Check the Plesk docs article for more configuration info.

We advise Administrators to ensure the recommended components set include all the components necessary for hosting. Including managing the web server, mail server, and database server. Furthermore, the WordPress Toolkit in Plesk Onyx on Ubuntu 16.04 only provides basic functionality. So we advise users of this Plesk license to upgrade their license.

The Benefits of Alibaba Cloud

Install Plesk on Alibaba Cloud - Plesk

This Cloud service is highly-secure and reliable, holding an international network of 18 data centers. Less network latency means your ecommerce clients can complete faster transactions, and with less errors. You only need to look at the sheer amount of annual transactions that Alibaba Cloud powers to verify its strength.

This suite also includes data storage, relational databases, big-data processing, DDoS protection, and even content delivery networks. Moreover, SMEs need to ensure they use reliable, high-performing and elastic technology that lets their business scale as needed. Alibaba Cloud not only caters for cloud hosting, security, and storage needs, but can also allow businesses to expand and compete in the ever-challenging markets of today.

How to become a Plesk Support Engineer

So, you applied to become a Plesk Support Engineer and after a series of interviews and negotiations, you signed the contract. Congrats! You’ve just become a part of an effective and successful team. You’ll spend the first five weeks going through an intensive technical onboarding process full of lessons, hands-on exercises, and tests. Plesk University and the team behind it will be helping you along the way.

First steps to becoming a Plesk Support Engineer

Technical Knowledge - Plesk support engineer

First, we need to make sure, that you are familiar with all the basic OS and networking technologies at the Plesk’s core. For that end, we have two basic OS courses: one for Linux, and one for Windows.

Each course starts with a comprehensive test of your initial knowledge. This helps us identify knowledge gaps, tailor the course’s content to address them, and exclude topics with which you are already familiar, thus shortening education time.

Basic OS Courses

Plesk OS basic course

Basic OS courses consist of video, text and external resources that cover all manner of topics:

  • Command-line basics.
  • Linux package management.
  • Services and processes.
  • Networking fundamentals.
  • User and group management.
  • Installing and monitoring Windows services.
  • NTFS permissions.
  • …and many more.

We always recommend taking notes while studying – you will need them to complete small lab exercise after each topic. Practice is essential to learning and retaining the knowledge.

Advanced topics, such as MySQL, Apache/nginx/IIS, Firewall, and DNS, have complex lab exercises. For example, in the Apache exercise, your task is to install the web server, configure two name-based virtual hosts, and enable PHP on one of them. If you feel up to it, you can also complete bonus tasks: configure mod_rewrite rules and add a domain alias.

Completing these lab exercises will require your best efforts. You’ll need to use your notes, search through documentation, and look through available solutions on services like StackExchange and ServerFault. Then, find a way to achieve the required results.

StackOverflow Copy-Pasting by O'Reilly

Knowledge Assessment

Knowledge assessment test

Once we cover all topics, you’ll pass the post-training knowledge assessment. This is the same test you passed at the beginning of the course. It helps us measure the improvement of your skills and determine any possible knowledge gaps left after the training.

We need a +80% grade to consider the training a success. If the grade is lower, we’ll figure out the topics you’re struggling with together. Then, give you extra materials to study, before you can re-take the test.

Completing Basic OS courses takes around two weeks. After that, it is time to start learning about Plesk. For that, we use our official Plesk courses, which are also available to the public.

Plesk Onyx Courses – For Support Engineers too

Plesk Onyx Professional

In Plesk Onyx Professional, you’ll learn how to install, configure, and use Plesk. After each module, you’ll need to complete objectives on a test server. Install Plesk on Linux and Windows servers, configure security settings according to best practices, set up a service plan and create a customer account, and configure backup to a cloud storage or a FTP server.

At the end of this course, you should pass the Plesk Onyx Professional Certification exam. All Plesk Support engineers are required to earn a Professional certification before they start working on customers’ requests. Later, within first three months of your career, you also need to pass both Plesk Onyx Expert exams.

Then, in Plesk Onyx Expert courses (for Linux and for Windows), you will learn how to upgrade, maintain and troubleshoot a Plesk server. Each module in an Expert-level course has a troubleshooting lab exercise. Here your task is to troubleshoot and fix a problem after you run a “troublemaker” script on your server. The same script will help you determine if you succeeded or not.

After the Expert courses, you’ll learn about and try your hand at Migrating to Plesk Onyx. Further down the line you’ll get familiar with our top extensions: WordPress Toolkit, SEO Toolkit, Git, and Docker. As with all the previous courses in this education program, you are required to apply your newly acquired knowledge on practice. All of these are available at Plesk University.

Next stop: Graduation as Plesk Support Engineer

Plesk support engineers graduation

You’ll also learn about our tools and processes.

Plesk University courses

Expert-level courses now include additional instructions and scripts for lab exercises. Which you can complete in your own lab environment in order to practice troubleshooting tasks.

Step 4: Schedule an exam

Once you complete the course, we’ll automatically assign you a certification exam. However, there’s no requirement to complete the exam right away. So you can take your time to review and complete practical tasks.

All exams are conducted with a remote proctor. This little guy will verify your credentials and monitor your activity during the exam via web camera, microphone, and remote-access software. This procedure guarantees that we only grant Plesk certificates when users fully earn them.

How do you schedule the exam? Start by making a free exam appointment at least 72 hours in advance. Or else, you can even pay a small fee for priority scheduling. You know, if you just can’t wait to get that sweet certificate. Which we understand, of course.

You’ll find instructions on how to schedule an exam appointment in the intro to each Plesk certification course.

Step 5: Pass the exam

When the time comes, start your exam as we guide you to in the introduction to the certification course. The proctor will verify your identity. Then it will secure your environment by observing your workplace and closing all disallowed programs during the exam. You’ll then unlock the exam with a password. Ta-da! It’s all fancy stuff.

The exam takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete and contains 20 to 30 multiple-choice scenario-based questions. This, however, depends on the level. In order to pass the exam, you need at least 80% of questions to be correct.

If you fail your first try, no judgment – we don’t make it that easy anyway. But you’ll have to wait seven days for your next opportunity to pass the exam. We suggest you spend this time revising course materials because unfortunately, we don’t provide a third attempt at the moment.

Share your success

Once you’ve passed the exam, you’ll get an automatic certificate which you’ll be able to download and print as a PDF. Here’s what it will look like:

We’ll also issue you a shiny digital badge within five business days of you completing the exam. And what’s more, you can share this badge on social media channels, and even embed it to your LinkedIn. Or if email’s your thing still, you can add it to your email signature.
