As a quick case study of the multicloud storage approach in action, we can turn to streaming giant Netflix. A business based on delivering video via the cloud, Netflix has been open about its model. It’s also been open about how its main cloud provider has long been Amazon Web Services (AWS). More recently, however, the company has begun working with another provider: Google Cloud.

The move was reportedly executed to take advantage of the competing provider’s unique functions, from disaster recovery to artificial intelligence. Although switching providers may threaten its long-term relationship with AWS, the multicloud benefits far outweigh the risks. And in this case, it’s Multicloud storage that comes on top. The open-source tool it developed for Multicloud storage is called Spinnaker, and it’s even supported by AWS, Google, and Microsoft.

Before Spinnaker, Netflix was famous for putting all its eggs in the AWS basket. By multi-sourcing its data storage, the company has reduced its dependency on one provider. Thus, minimizing the risks of outages that occur without multicloud storage, and improving its flexibility for sustained growth.

What Are the Multicloud Advantages?

Multicloud management clearly has many benefits. For many organizations, hitting that 99.9% availability and significantly decreasing latency are enough to convince them. But it can also give you a range of integrations that only work on specific clouds.

For instance, if you have sensitive data you don’t want in the public cloud but need to build integrations for it. You can build workloads on the private side that can take advantage of the private sensitive data. This all-around makes for a more efficient workflow and greater user experience.

Potential Multicloud Problems

Multicloud management isn’t all good news. Alongside the many benefits of working in a complex multicloud environment, come several challenges. IBM outline these three challenges as Rapid Application Innovation, Data Overload, and DevOps and Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) best practices.

  • Rapid Application Innovation: As businesses work more with hybrid and multicloud architecture, the volume and complexity of objects and metrics increases. The result is monitoring and securing all your operations becomes an increasingly difficult task.
  • Data Overload:New technology in big data and artificial intelligence afford businesses many advantages. But with only traditional management methods at their disposal, they often lack the management capabilities to safely handle the data and implement an effective data strategy.
  • DevOps and SRE Best Practices: Employing DevOpsand Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) best practices is becoming increasingly expected in organizations. Moving to a DevOps model, however, is difficult because it is not just about technology, but also making cultural and operational shifts with teams — particularly in learning new ways of working and the introduction of new roles.

When trying to address these challenges, businesses are typically stuck between choosing a management solution that provides speed or control. But not both. An effective multicloud management solution, therefore, allows businesses to strike a balance and achieve both.

“A Unified Approach Across Multiple Clouds”

A lot of the challenges of the multicloud approach are mitigated by choosing the right multicloud solutions. According to the IBM developer Sai Vennam, there are three areas in particular that an effective multicloud management solution needs to address. Together, these three areas or “pillars” form the basis of what can be a “unified approach across multiple clouds”.

  1. Automation:

It’s necessary to have a consistent and yet flexible way to deploy and manage applications. Multicloud solutions enable this by simplifying and automating application management. Plus, improving flexibility with features like multicloud backup, disaster recovery, and the ability to move workloads. Not to mention reducing costs thanks to intelligent data analysis.

  1. Visibility:

With so many clusters running in so many environments, it can be difficult to know what’s running where. A multicloud management solution enables businesses to know instantly what business application components are running where, as well as to be able to monitor the health of resources across multiple clouds, both public and private.

  1. Governance:

Increased use of cloud-native components should not also mean increased management costs and risk to your business. Yet DevOps teams have the difficult task of employing governance and security policies across multiple clouds. With a single unified dashboard, compliance policies can be pushed across multiple clusters with a single command, reducing both time, cost, and risk.

Getting the Multicloud Advantages

Multicloud management can be overwhelming. Each cloud-based service inevitably comes with its own tools and multicloud advantages. And so, when you use services across multiple providers, managing them is going to be nothing less than a complex and costly task.

As well as covering the three pillars of automation, visibility, and governance, multicloud solutions must be simple and efficient overall. New multicloud platforms, with central control panels and rapid access and delivery to multiple clouds, prove ideal. The multicloud solutions that companies have been waiting for.

The DevOps Cycle 2: Automated Deployment, Operations and Monitoring

Deploying in classical organizations has always been a pain. In the DevOps cycle, two roles, Dev and IT, with divergent objectives and interests battle to publish the application. These go in different work environments, such as development, integration, quality / test, pre-production, and production.

As in any chain, it’s easy to break through the weakest link. And the more steps in the deployment processes, the more possibilities of human failure. Thus, DevOps promotes the automation of deployments through tools and scripts. With the goal of solving the entire process with an approval or activation of a feature.


Between each deployment environment, we must consider the context management – create, configure and destroy environments). Then, perform and pass the specific tests of each one, such as performance, resilience, functional, safety or UX tests. After, we manage configuration management (CMDB) according to the complex needs of different deployment contexts.

The most critical in this phase is the arrival of the Cloud, with its Infrastructure capabilities as a code. This forces a change from a finite infrastructure management to a management based on permanent cost optimization.

Operations: Ensuring proper functioning


Only a minority of apps go into production without constant optimization, evolution, or support. Usually, all operations related to its operation must happen continuously throughout the life of the software. This way we have:

  1. Resources adjusted according to demand or growth of the application
  2. Dynamic change in the infrastructure due to security, performance, and availability
  3. Process optimization to improve execution and exploitation.

During the operations phase, the Cloud concept applies like a ring to the finger. Be it public, private or hybrid, this platform offers opportunities of scalability, persistence, availability, transformation, resilience and security. Furthermore, we automate the optimization of operations scenarios to mitigate failures that happen because of human error.


DevOps monitoring

This last phase of a DevOps process is a permanent phase and applies to the entire cycle. It’s where we monitor, analyze and measure all that displays the current status overview of the application and its infrastructure. Including all the dependencies.

And it has a reactive slope, where according to the results, we adjust the platform. Moreover, continuous learning allows us to anticipate needs and risks.

Now, the continuous feedback of all the areas of the DevOps cycle is consolidated and included in the next iteration. Either during the Planning phase, or immediately with specific corrections.

About the phases of the DevOps cycle

This was a generic, and perhaps idyllic, vision of a complete DevOps cycle. One following a logical structure, based on experience and literature. However, the reality is much more complex both in the implementation and in the execution.

But without a doubt, the biggest obstacle is communication between teams with different objectives and interests. Or maybe leaving your comfort zone to follow a trend. However, the benefits remain important in the field of productivity, Time to Market, or the flexibility of the business against customer demands.

The DevOps Cycle 1: Management, Planning and Continuous Integration

One thing producing innovative movements in companies is DevOps. Let’s now clarify the phases of the iterative DevOps cycle: Planning, Development, Continuous integration, Deployment, Operation and Monitoring.

It’s important to understand that it’s one of multiple representations, not the definitive canon, simplified into 6 main phases. However, it’s not a cascade cycle where the phases are separated by boundaries. Nor are initiated when the previous one has ended completely. Now, let’s look at each DevOps cycle phase in more detail.


DevOps planning

Every project needs a vision that indicates the ultimate work goal to its participants. Defining a set of functionalities giving each iteration value, the criteria to be fulfilled and the end – for each project phase. A Living Product Stack which continuously supports a process of gardening – from a business point of view.

This feeds the different phases of development and operations. Also addressing changes and evolutions according to a continuous improvement process, based on continuous feedback. It’s also important that Business and Management get training on tools and metrics in order to have enough visibility of the project’s development.

Development – Building code

Software development

This phase is where the project gets built. Writing code, designing infrastructure, automating processes, defining tests or implementing security. It’s where, at present, you’ll find the most important effort in automating repetitive or complex actions.

However, the most important part of this phase is evidence. Either in a management application, operations with data or in the deployment of virtual infrastructure. Developers will store code in a code manager that allows historical viewing, branches, versioning, and more. But this isn’t enough, and each piece built must include its own automated tests.

Meaning, the mechanisms with which the system itself can ensure that what we have done is correct. That it doesn’t fail or negatively impact other parties, meets the acceptance criteria, and points out developmental errors.

Continuous integration – aka. peaceful sleep

Continuous integration is to automate the mechanism of review, validation, testing and alerts of the value built in the iterations, from a global point of view. The arrival of DevOps and the concepts of Infrastructure as a code, make IT also a full participant of this phase.

This is the unique functionality or feature, built in the development environment, together with the automatic tests that ensure it works well. Then published in a service that integrates it with the rest of the application.

Tests include ones for each functionality, integration tests of the whole application, functional tests, acceptance tests, quality analysis of the code, and regression tests. And if something fails, the early warning will pop up, indicating which piece/ line is breaking the system.

Ultimately, the closer you get to the moment of initiating the critical path of deployment, the quieter you get. Because more evidence is included in the work. Quick Start Guide: Create a new instance

After creating an account and navigating to Servers, click on Deploy new instance.

1. Leave the server type on Vultr Cloud Compute (VC2) and choose a location:

2. Next select the Server Type (operating system) from the list available. I have selected Ubuntu 16.04 x64, because it’s a very popular, reliable, and well supported distribution.

3.For the Server Size you can pick a size that is appropriate for you but Plesk Onyx will run great on any of them. In this tutorial, we’ll use the 1 CPU, 1GB memory option, 2000GB Bandwith, 20GB SSD that is currently priced at $10/month.

4. Each of the following features has to be turned on manually.

  • Enable IPv6: For no additional cost, Vultr will give your instance an IPv6 IP address. This means your instance can communicate via IPv6.
  • Enable Private Network: Add an internal IP to your VM

6. Now that you’ve set your features, it’s come time to set up SSH access. If you already have your SSH key setup, great. Otherwise, the information about creation of SSH keys can be found here.

7. The last step in getting your instance create is to give them a simple Server Label to identify the server. We’ll use plesk. Then click Deploy Now to create and install the server.

Your new instance will deploy in a couple of minutes. Once your VPS instance is deployed, it will be automatically started. To find out the Public IP address of the instance, Username, and Password, click on Manage.

Connecting the instance via SSH

1. Open up your favorite SSH client application and connect to the instance utilizing the public IP address assigned to the instance.

  • Username: The default admin user is root
  • Password: The initial root password to your server can be found in your Server Information page.

2. Install Plesk using One-Click installer or run through Plesk Installation and Upgrade Wizard to deploy custom installation:

Run the following command:

# sh ‹(curl || wget -O -

3. Generate a one-time login for logging in to Plesk Onyx

Run the following command:

# sudo plesk login

4. Replace the hostname with your IP address to log in to Plesk.

Note: You cannot use the hostname based on the droplet name the first time you log in because Plesk has not passed the initial configuration and the full hostname has not been created yet.

Running the Installation/Configuration wizard

1. When you log into Plesk Onyx, you will see the View Selector page. On this page, you can choose the appearance of the panel as per your requirements.

Once your purpose has been identified, a second drop-down menu will emerge asking you select your preferred layout. This can be changed later.

2. Then comes the Settings page. Here you need to fill in your hostname, IP configuration, and admin password.

  • New hostname: Fill in your primary domain (i.e.
  • Default IP Address: Leave the IP as default.
  • New password: Change the default administrator password.

3. Next is the Administrator information page. Just fill in the information asked and proceed to the next page.

4. After that comes the license key install page. You can order, retrieve and install a 14-day full-featured trial license from this page. Since you have already purchased a license key, proceed with installing the license key.

5. On the Create your Webspace page you can specify the domain name of your first subscription, and system user account username and password that you will use to manage it. This will create a subscription for hosting multiple sites.

6. Woohoo! Plesk is now configured!
