As more people today use the internet to conduct product research and shop for goods, having an online presence is more important than ever. It gives your customers an easy way to connect with your business.

As a developer or a digital agency, you already know the value of having a website. But the challenge you’re facing is finding the right domain name for an e-commerce business.

In a world with a growing online presence, you must consider your brand name and how well it will do as a domain and as keywords in general.

But there are also some downsides to consider with this approach. Exact match domains can appear spammy (e.g., BestRockingChairsForSale.com) and they restrict the products you can sell.

For example, if your domain name was something like BestDumbbellsForSale.com, visitors to your site might think you only sell dumbbells. This can be problematic if you also sell other fitness equipment on your site like medicine balls or treadmills.

 

Keep the Domain Name Short

Shorter domain names are generally better for a number of reasons — they’re easier to read and visitors can type them into their browser faster.

Shorter domains are also easier to remember and have a higher chance of being “catchy.” For example, visitors are more likely to recall a name like Gamify.com then a domain name like OnlineVideoGameBuilder.com.

It may sound seemingly minor, but the ability to stay with someone after they visit your site can give you a huge competitive advantage online. It means that visitors are more likely to recall your brand in the future should they need your products or services.

For reference, the limit for domain names is 67 characters, but ideally you should try to keep it to 20 characters or less. Of course, coming up with a shorter domain name is by no means easy as most are already registered.

Even if you do find a shorter domain name, it’ll likely come with a huge price tag like this:

Unless your business is already established and generating a significant amount of revenue, you may not be in a position to buy a premium name. The good news is there are other ways that you can find the right name for your e-commerce business.

Play with ‘Creative’ Spellings

Generally, you want to avoid overly-unique spellings in your domain name. That means you must be careful with spellings that are different from how those words are normally spelled. For example, AwesomeToyz.com may sound great, but visitors are likely to land on AwesomeToys.com instead unless you clarify the ‘Z’. However, unofficial spelling or coining unique words can avoid confusing your brand name with the existing words (i.e. ‘Trybe’ instead of ‘Tribe’, to avoid search results of tribes). Whatever spelling you choose, register domains that someone can easily remember and type into their browser. If they can’t because they’re not sure how to spell a word, then it’s back to the drawing board.

Consider Other Domain Extensions

Generally, you should aim to register a .com domain name as it’s the most common and widely used extension. But if the .com of the domain you want is registered or it’s only available at a premium price, another option is to consider other extensions.

For an online store for your e-commerce business, you might consider using the .store extension.

Choosing a different extension opens up even more options that you can choose from. Other extensions that you might consider include:

  • .shop
  • .trade
  • .boutique
  • .online
  • .sale

One thing to keep in mind with domain extensions is the renewal fees. For example, some domain registrars offer .store extensions for an attractive price to entice store owners, but then increase the renewal price the following year.

Check the initial domain name cost for popular registrars and their renewal prices before you register to avoid any surprises.

 

Avoid Trademarks

If your domain is too close to a well-known brand or trademark in the same industry, customers will almost always land on that competitor’s site instead of yours.

You might also run into legal trouble. If you want to sell electronics online, registering a domain name with the word “apple” in it (e.g., AppleSupply.com) is probably not a good idea.

But if you’re an organic farm selling apples to customers worldwide, then registering a domain name with the word “apple” in it (e.g., OrganicApples.com) is probably fine.

Take off with Plesk SEO Toolkit

If you’ve got an existing Plesk installation, you can just login and go to Server Management > Extension. Then Find SEO Toolkit and click Install Now. You’re now ready to start with the free version of the extension. Alternatively, you can buy a license and install it through Server Management > Tools & Settings > License Management > Additional Licenses.

If you’re new to Plesk – no problem! If you like, you can Download Plesk free from here. Then install it on your internet host where your WordPress site is located. However, you can also ask your internet hosting provider to install it for you.

Installation for Yoast SEO

In WordPress – navigate to Plugins > Install new, find Yoast SEO, click Install Now, then Activate. You’ll see a new menu called SEO.

Now start the Configuration Wizard found on the Dashboard of the General page. It’ll show you all the relevant basic SEO settings step by step:

  1. Activate site for indexing through search engine spiders
  2. Select the type of site
  3. Enter information about the company represented for use in Google’s Knowledge graph
  4. Select whether pages should be shown in the search results. This controls which content will be included in the sitemaps (see discussion below in the section ‘Creating XML sitemaps’
  5. Select if there will be single or multiple authors
  6. Set up the template for page titles

Your basic settings are now complete. But you can return to the configuration wizard anytime if you need to change any settings.

Connecting to Google Search Console

After adding your website to the search console, Google needs to verify your website belongs to you. Yoast SEO makes this easy:

  1. Choose the verification method HTML tag

  3. In WordPress – open SEO > General > Webmaster tools
  4. Paste the code in the Google field and click Save Changes.
  5. Go back to Google Search Console and click Verify.

Search engines consider yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com to be two different websites. So you need to decide which one you’ll use when you set up your WordPress website. You can set your preferred URL under Settings > General for both WordPress Address and Site Address.

Make sure your website’s URL is human-readable and contains the keywords of your content. You can change the selection under Settings > Permalinks. Add /%category%/%postname%/ in Custom Structure. You also need to leave the Category base field empty, so that the title of your post or page is included in your URL automatically.

3. Exclude pages from search engines

Search engines honor a clean information structure. To ensure crawlers exclude irrelevant pages (eg. login pages), simply add a robots meta tag with a noindex and/or nofollow attribute to the HTML code of a page.

Unfortunately, WordPress doesn’t make this easy. So you’ll either have to edit code or use a plugin.

4. Add schema.org for rich snippets

Google can add additional information, like review stars or images, to your page summary in the search result to make it more eye-catching. But you have to provide this information in a standardized schema.org format first.

Some WordPress themes or specialized plugins provide the necessary markup you need to create a rich snippet. If not, you’ll need to edit the code yourself.

Assessing content quality and relevance

Once you configure the technical foundations correctly, you’re ready to create and publish content. Remember: Google honors content that answers a user’s question in the most relevant and complete way first. So,

  • Choose a keyword that’s relevant to your users, matches your content, and has enough search traffic. You can find lots of techniques and tools to support your research.
  • Create a good title and use it as a headline following best practices.
  • Create a readable text – paying attention to critical SEO signals: length, internal linking, use of headlines, use of keywords in headlines, and overall readability.

Add XML Sitemaps

Google recommends you provide an XML sitemap for your website, containing links to all of the pages you want indexed. WordPress doesn’t come with XML sitemap support. So you’ll have to use a plugin, or create and update it manually. Don’t forget to submit it to Google via the Google Search Console.

Because things can break or go wrong with your site, you should regularly check for common SEO issues, like:

  • Crawlability: Can the search engine spiders crawl every page you want to be indexed, or are they getting rejected?
  • Orphaned pages: Is every page linked to correctly, and do you provide enough links?
  • 404 errors: Are there any broken links in your site causing a ‘page not found’ error, or code 404?

Every site owner should register their website in the Google Search Console, as it checks everything from indexing and broken links to mobile problems. It also gives you visibility into the traffic you receive from the search engine.
